Job Summary

CITGO Benefits The LAB RELIEF TECHNICIAN is an on-site position located at the Lemont Refinery covering shifts for both laboratory technicians and laboratory assistants. Performs analysis of petrochemical feedstocks, intermediates, and finished products in a production facility laboratory. Collects, distributes and disposes of samples Records test results in designated locations. Records tracking information and samples and stores the samples in designated locations. Maintains a safe and clean work environment. Maintains laboratory records. Exhibits competency in all relevant laboratory test methods.

Starting pay is $39.76/hour

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Biology or related degree or 5 years of laboratory experience in lieu of degree
  • Chemical or petroleum refining experience preferred
  • Selected individuals must be able to work a rotating shift schedule in a 24-hour operation
  • Basic knowledge of computers required as position needs to access computer programs and enter lab data
  • Transportation Workers Identification Credential (TWIC) Eligibility.
    • TWIC Eligibility Requirements: The Maritime Transportation Security Act requires all persons who will need unescorted access to a regulated facility to have a valid Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC), issued in accordance with the rules established by the United States Coast Guard and Transportation Security Administration. All candidates must be eligible to receive a TWIC in order to be considered for an offer.

  • Job Duties

  • Analyze various plant samples using analytical equipment including Gas Chromatographs, titrations, distillations, sulfur, x-rays, physical property instruments, and several other analyzers.
  • Enter data into the laboratory data system (cBliss).
  • Produce and issue data sheets for final products.
  • Ensure equipment functionality, accuracy, and reliability to maximize utilization of resources for safety, cost, and schedules
  • Drive throughout the plant and pickup samples from designated areas at designated times. Drop off supplies for the operating units for lab samples.
  • Perform analysis on plant samples including flash point, color analysis, pour and cloud point, and several others.
  • Properly and safely dispose of unused samples from all areas of the lab.
  • Communicate with appropriate Management, Shift Foremen, Technicians, and Chemists including proper notification of unusual or empty samples, special requests that should be discontinued, spare parts stock supply levels, out of compliance SQC (statistical quality control) charts, and recommend solutions to improve analysis quality and time.
  • Serve as a technical resource for Operations, Process Engineering, and Management to provide expertise for special projects, requests for specialized analyses, and optimize efficiency of Refinery operations.
  • Adhere to local and federal regulations pertaining the analysis of finished products.
  • Identify existing and potential instrument problems, monitor SQC charts to determine instrument's performance, and perform routine maintenance as required reducing equipment downtime leading to outsourcing costs.
  • Ability to work with little or no supervision most of the time.
  • Ensure proper housekeeping, maintain a clean and orderly work area, and assist in maintenance and cleanliness of the refinery laboratory.
