Unit Manager (Healthcare)



Position Summary

The Nursing Unit Manager is responsible for overseeing the daily operations and clinical performance of a designated nursing unit within the skilled nursing facility. This role ensures the highest standards of nursing care, regulatory compliance, and staff performance. The Nursing Unit Manager provides leadership, guidance, and support to licensed nurses and certified nursing assistants (CNAs), collaborating closely with the interdisciplinary team to promote resident-centered care.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Supervise and coordinate the daily activities of nursing personnel on the assigned unit.
  • Ensure quality care is delivered in accordance with established policies, procedures, and state/federal regulations.
  • Participate in resident care planning, interdisciplinary team meetings, and discharge planning.
  • Monitor resident conditions and make clinical decisions or escalate issues as necessary.
  • Conduct rounds to assess resident care, documentation, and compliance with care plans.
  • Assist with admissions, transfers, and discharge processes.
  • Ensure proper medication administration and documentation in compliance with standards of practice.
  • Evaluate staff performance, provide feedback, and conduct training and in-services as needed.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives and audits.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Nursing to ensure adequate staffing levels and scheduling coverage.
  • Maintain accurate records and prepare required reports related to resident care, staffing, incidents, and compliance.
  • Serve as a clinical resource and mentor to nursing staff.
  • Respond promptly to resident, family, or staff concerns or complaints.

Qualifications

Education and Licensure:

  • Current and valid Registered Nurse (RN) or LVN license in CA.
  • Associate or Bachelor's degree in Nursing required; BSN preferred.
  • CPR/BLS certification required.

Experience:
  • Minimum of 2 years of nursing experience in a long-term care or SNF setting.
  • Prior supervisory or leadership experience preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Strong clinical judgment and problem-solving skills.
  • Thorough knowledge of federal, state, and local regulations governing long-term care.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to manage time effectively, prioritize tasks, and delegate appropriately.
  • Proficient in electronic health records (EHR) and documentation practices.

Work Environment & Physical Demands
  • This job operates in a healthcare environment and may require extended periods of standing, walking, and occasional lifting of residents or equipment.
  • Must be able to respond to emergencies promptly and work flexible hours as needed, including evenings, weekends, or holidays.
