Product Testing & Certification Engineer (CRL) (Architecture)



Reporting to the Director of Product Testing & Certification, the Product Testing & Certification Engineer coordinates and performs testing and certification of new and existing materials, components, and whole products used in architectural commercial and residential building applications.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Coordinates and performs testing of various components and products internally and coordinates testing at third-party laboratories.
  • Coordinates activities for achieving and maintaining third-party product certifications and approvals of various commercial and residential fenestration products, architectural products, and associated hardware.
  • Routinely interacts with personnel from various inter-company departments including Engineering, Sales, Customer Service, Quality, and Manufacturing as well as third-party engineers and testing laboratories.
  • Designs, drafts, and develops test fixtures, sets up and conducts tests, maintains test logs, and produces test reports.
  • Coordinates the production of test reports from third-party test labs and reviews the accuracy of such test reports.
  • Conducts tests according to standardized test methods such as ASTM, AAMA, ANSI/BHMA, and NFRC and creates test methods for testing not defined by existing standards.
  • Produces submittal packages as required for product certification by third-party entities such as Underwriters Laboratories and NFRC.
  • Monitors the various building codes, test methods, and product standards for new releases or revisions and advises others of necessary product updates if affected.
  • Participates in educational opportunities internally and externally to enhance knowledge of product and job skills.
  • Safely performs tasks and adheres to all company safety policies and procedures.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Skills, Knowledge, and Ability Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical or manufacturing engineering or equivalent technical discipline.
  • Possesses excellent analytical skills required to provide innovative approaches to problem solving.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD Mechanical/Inventor software.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Products – Word, Outlook, and Excel.
  • Ability to read and understand mechanical design, shop, and jobsite drawings.
  • Possesses solid verbal and written communication skills for preparation of reports, presentation of information to others, and effective interaction with associates, vendors, and customers.
  • Ability to work independently and prioritize work with deadlines.
  • Ability to work in a fast paced, team environment to meet required deadlines.
  • Utilizes strong time management and organizational skills to successfully multi-task.
  • Ability to wear company-issued personal protection (safety) equipment including but not limited to safety glasses, gloves, hard hat, ear plugs, protective footwear, and safety vest. 
  • Employee may be exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and moving mechanical parts.
  • Regularly required to stand or sit for extended periods and possesses the ability to climb or kneel.  Vision abilities include close vision and inspection, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

Equipment

  • Ability to operate, read, and comprehend precision electronic and analog measuring instruments.
  • Ability to use and/or operate mechanical tools, pneumatic, hydraulic, and powered test equipment.
  • Ability to operate personal desktop and laptop computers, printers/plotters, copy machine, calculator, writing instruments, telephone, and various printers.

Work Environment

  • While much of the time will be spent in an office environment, many duties involve being in a plant environment where noise levels can be moderate to high and be subject to the same general climate conditions of the region (heat, cold, humidity, etc.).
  • Chemicals, dust, pollen, and other typical airborne particulate matter are present within the atmosphere of the production floor and may create some odors in the plant. The company, in an effort to provide its employees with a safe and healthy working environment, limits exposure to chemicals through written procedures, engineering controls and PPE.

Salary: 75,300 - $94,000
