CNC Operator Intern (Finance)

Cornell is seeking a motivated Intern CNC Operator to join our growing team!

This is a paid internship offering $21.00 per hour, with a minimum schedule of 20 hours per week, 4 hours of work per day, Monday-Friday. There is potential for this role to transition into a full-time opportunity. The ideal candidate is based in the Portland metro area, currently enrolled in a local CNC certification or associate degree program to become a Machinist, and motivated to gain hands-on experience.

SUMMARY DESCRIPTION:

As the CNC Operator Intern, you will gain hands-on experience setting up and performing machining operations on a variety of metals, castings, forgings, and fabrications. Under guidance, you will learn to operate both major and minor machines. You will also be responsible for setting up fixtures and cutters to carry out machining tasks across diverse materials.

You will learn how to:

• Operate from a "work at machine" schedule on a computer system or from verbal instructions from production control.
• Use computer system to clock in and out of daily work
• Study blueprints, sketches, drawings, manuals, specifications, or sample parts to determine dimensions and tolerances of finished work piece, sequence of operations, and setup requirements.
• Use measuring tools to control machining operations such as dial indicators, micrometers, scales, tape measures, calipers, and other measuring tools.
• Selects, aligns, and secures holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials on machines such as mills, lathes, jig borers, grinders, and shapers.
• Calculate and set controls to regulate machining factors such as speed, feed, coolant flow, and depth and angle of cut, or enter commands to retrieve, input, or edit computerized machine control media.
• Start and observe machine operation to detect malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining and adjust machine controls or control media as required.
• Verify conformance of finished workpiece to specifications.
• Do basic maintenance to machines, including checking and maintaining oils and fluids in machines. Reports problems with a machine to the Manager or Supervisor.
• Make setup sheets for new jobs and update old setup sheets.
• Confer with engineers, production personnel, programmers, or others to resolve machining problems.
• Keep machines and work areas clean and free of debris. Mops work area at end of shift.
• Operate forklifts and other lifting devices.
• Follow all safety precautions and practice safe working habits. Reports all unsafe conditions and injuries to the supervisor immediately.

• Ability to stand for extended periods and perform repetitive tasks with focus.
• Capability to occasionally lift up to 50 pounds safely and effectively.
• Strong problem-solving skills paired with exceptional attention to detail.
• Knowledge of measurement devices
• Dependable with punctuality and consistent attendance.
• Familiarity or prior exposure to hand tools, power tools, or manufacturing equipment is a plus.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

High school diploma or general education degree (GED) or vocational school required and one-year prior machining related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
