Supermarket Sous Chef (Food Services)



Our North Babylon Store has an exciting new position in their Kitchen! We are seeking a professional Sous Chef for our busy, gourmet Supermarket Kitchen. This FT individual for our Catering & Hot Bar will play a key leadership role in managing the daily production and execution of catering orders and hot bar offerings. This position supports the Executive Chef or Kitchen Manager by supervising kitchen staff, ensuring consistent food quality, and driving efficient, high-volume production. The Sous Chef helps deliver exceptional customer experiences through fresh, flavorful, and timely prepared foods in both the hot bar and catered events.

Responsibilities
Oversee the daily preparation and execution of catering orders and hot bar meals, ensuring timeliness, presentation, and flavor meet brand standards.Coordinate with the Executive Chef and store leadership on catering schedules, event planning, and hot bar menu rotations.Supervise kitchen staff, assigning production tasks and ensuring adherence to recipes, portioning, and prep timelines.Monitor food safety, sanitation, and allergen procedures to comply with health regulations and internal protocols.Maintain clear communication with front-of-house and customer service teams to ensure smooth catering pickups and timely fulfillment of large orders.Manage inventory related to hot bar and catering, including ordering, receiving, and proper storage of ingredients.Track production data, waste logs, and customer feedback to inform menu adjustments and improve profitability.Train team members in production techniques, plating, and safe food handling.Act as the kitchen lead in the absence of the Executive Chef or Kitchen ManagerOther duties and functions as assigned

Requirements and skills
High school diploma equivalentCulinary degree or equivalent hands-on experience in high-volume kitchens, preferably in a retail or catering environment.2+ years of experience in a supervisory or sous chef role with a focus on prepared foods or cateringStrong knowledge of commercial food production, portion control, and hot line service.Familiarity with dietary restrictions, allergen controls, and food labeling practices.Ability to manage multiple priorities and adapt to last-minute order changes or high-volume demand.Excellent communication, organization, and time management skills.ServSafe or equivalent food safety certification (or willingness to obtain).

Working Conditions
Most of the time is spent moving about continuously on hard surfaces. There may be a need to frequently position oneself to examine and/or scan merchandise, including bending, climbing, crawling, handling, pulling, reaching, and stooping.May require lifting objects up to 30 pounds. May require lifting and moving heavy and/or awkward objects more than 30 pounds with assistance.Usually in a comfortable indoor environment surrounded by moving machinery and/or loud equipment that may require shouting in order to be heard. There could be exposure to temperature extremes from freezers, ovens, and/or coolers.There may be occasional exposure to cleaning agents.
