Lead Custodian (Maintenance)



General Statement: The Fleet Science Center's Lead Custodian supports the Fleet Mission and Visitor Experience Philosophy by maintaining and cleaning the building premises including carpets, lighting, hardware, etc.  This position serves as a leader within the Custodial Team and works closely with the Custodial Supervisor to ensure all janitorial needs are met.  This is a full-time, benefitted position primarily working evening and nighttime shifts, but may need to occasionally work during daytime business hours to provide additional coverage.

Reports to: Custodial supervisor and/or Director of Facilities.

Primary duties and responsibilities, including mental requirements of position.

  1. Clean and service restrooms.
  2. Clean mirrors, empty all trash and recycle containers, and pick up trash on floors in assigned areas.
  3. Vacuum lobby, IMAX theater, science center, lecture hall, and offices.
  4. Clean and sweep north and south entrances.
  5. Sweep, mop and buff all hard surface floors.
  6. Use a carpet extractor.
  7. Use hard surface scrubber.
  8. Clean all doors and glass inside and out.
  9. Carry out weekly maintenance of waterless urinals.
  10. Assist in training fellow custodial staff in equipment and cleaning methods.
  11. Create work orders and follow up on progress as required.
  12. Serve as the internal point of contact for custodial issues or concerns in supervisors' absence.
  13. Be knowledgeable of the Safety and Emergency plans for the building.
  14. Perform routine maintenance of equipment.
  15. Additional duties as assigned by supervisor and/or Director of Facilities.

Physical requirements of this position:

Medium work: Position involves the ability to frequently exert up to 20 pounds of force and occasionally up to 50 pounds of force to move objects.

Business location presence: This position requires physical presence at the business location during all assigned working hours in order to adequately perform all duties.

Experience, education, or skills required of the incumbent in this position:
 

ESSENTIAL:

  • Minimum 6 months lead or supervisory experience.
  • Minimum 6 months janitorial and custodial experience.
  • High school diploma.
  • Able to work independently and exercise sound judgement and decision making.
  • Able to communicate effectively with patrons, teammates, and other staff members.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office.

DESIRABLE:

  • Knowledge of Balboa Park and San Diego attractions.
  • Customer service experience. 
  • Knowledge of janitorial equipment such as buffers and carpet extractors.
