Military Initiatives Coordinator (Project Management)



The Military Initiatives Coordinator provides leadership and guidance to the military-connected and veteran student services (MVC) program. The position is designed to help develop and provide ongoing programming, outreach, engagement, environmental scanning, and assessment related to the MVC populations across campus. This role will partner with the HSC and Tulsa campuses to help facilitate, develop, implement, and administer similar engagement opportunities. The position will lead the coordination of programs by planning the program, coordinating activities and projects, distributing information, communicating, troubleshooting, preparing reports, collecting and maintaining data, attending meetings, etc. and will have some supervisory responsibilities.

Essential Duties: 

  • Represents the University of Oklahoma and the Office of Access and Opportunity in various settings involving internal and external constituents: students, faculty, staff, government partners, primary and secondary schools, relevant communities, and state agencies.
  • Provides leadership for the university's military-connected and veteran student services program
  • Develops and implement multi-campus programming and policy initiatives to enhance the experience and outcomes for military-connected students.
  • Collaborates with other Access and Opportunity team members as needed. Serves on OU committees and boards, as assigned by the Vice President or designee (e.g., Search committees, Task Force groups, etc.).
  • Leads university efforts to engage with military-connected students, faculty, and staff this includes developing campus and community engagement opportunities for active duty military, student veterans, and military-connected family members.
  • Oversees the operation of the Veteran Zone to ensure a positive, supportive, and engaging environment for student success.
  • Leads and contributes to planning and assessment activities for all military-connected student support services and programs offered through the Division of Access and Opportunity.
  • Establishes and maintains strategic partnerships with university stakeholders, external agencies, and military organizations.
  • Provides leadership operations for the OU Veterans Center (on behalf of the Vice President of Access and Opportunity). This includes creating and administering the annual budget and strategic direction for the OU Veterans Center.
  • Develops and administers yearly assessment plans to evaluate usage, effectiveness, and satisfaction with the Veteran's programs and services.
  • Collaborates with community partners and Veteran services organizations to offer information, programs, and workshops for Harper Veterans and military-connected students; schedules such opportunities within the Center or on campus as practical.   
  • Interprets and advises on federal and state legislation or policy related information affecting military-connected students; provide timely updates and recommendations. 
  • Provides program/process and/or policy recommendations to ensure a supportive environment for military-connected students.
  • Delegates operational tasks, as necessary, for effective implementation of programs and services.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience: Bachelor's Degree, AND:

  • 2 years of project development, programming, training, or related experience.

Skills:

  • Demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional teams and manage strategic initiatives.
  • Experience with assessment, process improvement, and policy interpretation.
  • Demonstrated experience of active engagement with advocacy-based and grassroots organizations that serve Higher Education communities or an associated field.
  • Familiarity with university culture and veteran support services.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills and strong interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency with social media platforms, Microsoft Office, Canvas, and other related software programs/modalities.
  • Strong process improvement skills/experience.
  • Ability to work well with others in a collaborative and respectful manner.
  • Ability to multi-task and deal with complexity on a frequent basis.
  • Ability to travel.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects and tasks in a dynamic and fast-paced environment.
  • Work in a fast-paced environment.
